Overwatch 2 Offers a Fresh Peek at Invasion PvE Missions and a Sojourn Animated Short

Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2: Invasion, the biggest update since last year's relaunch of the hero shooter, arrives next week and Blizzard has dropped a couple new trailers showing off some of what we can expect from the season, including PvP missions and some more story content.

As we’ve reported previously, Overwatch 2: Invasion will offer up three story missions, which will set players back $15. That may sound a bit steep, and perhaps it is, but these new missions will be set on their own custom-built maps and offer new story content and unique challenges. As the title implies, Invasion sees Null Sector, the militant Omnic liberation group led by Ramattra, launching a full-on attack on multiple fronts, but, of course, there’s probably more going on here than meets the eye. We see an array of classic and newer heroes fighting back against the Null Sector assault, including Sojourn, Lucio, Genji, Mercy, and Tracer. This all culminates in what looks to be a big battle against a giant mech boss. You can check it all out for yourself, below.

While the value proposition of these story missions will be debated endlessly, it definitely looks like Blizzard is sinking a fair amount of effort into them. These aren’t just repurposed PvP maps and gameplay with a quick cutscene tacked on. Still, you can’t help but what wonder what could have been if the full Overwatch 2 PvE experience, which was supposed to have many more missions, had come to fruition.

In addition to the new PvE story missions teaser, Blizzard has also released a new animated short for Sojourn. While she’s supposed to have been lying low since Overwatch was disbanded, it seems Sojourn has been doing some hero moonlighting work and the authorities aren’t happy about it. That said, their tune quickly changes when Null Sector launches their attack and they need her. Isn’t that always the way?

Pretty good little cinematic, although as a Canadian, I have to say – couldn’t they have sprung for actual Tim Hortons product placement? Would have made things feel a bit more authentic.

Overwatch 2 can be played on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5. The Invasion season kicks off on August 10.  What do you think? Will you be ponying up for the story missions or is the asking price just too rich for your blood?
