SEGA Cancels HYENAS and Other Unannounced Titles Following Restructering of Its European Operations

Hyenas cancelled sega sammy

SEGA Sammy has today announced the cancellation of Creative Assembly's HYENAS and other unannounced titles.

The cancellation is part of a restructuring of the company's European development efforts in order to be able to deal with the macroeconomic conditions.  The news was announced through an official Japanese press release on the SEGA Sammy website. "In response to the deterioration in profitability in the European region, we will review the title portfolio developed at each European site and discontinue "HYENAS" and some unannounced titles in development", the press release reads (translated from Japanese).

The company also said that additional measures are being considered in order to further improve the profitability of the company's European operations. "Furthermore, we will continue to consider measures to improve the profitability of our European bases other than those mentioned above", SEGA Sammy writes. "We will notify you as soon as the specific details and impact are determined."

Announced back in June of last year, Creative Assembly's HYENAS was to be a multi-team Sci-Fi heist game. Several alpha tests were conducted, and as could be read in our impressions article from last year, the game appeared to be far out from a 2023 release.

"What comes after, nobody knows", we wrote in September of last year. "Creative Assembly hasn't even determined the results of your success; that's how early in development Hyenas is. Even the 2023 release feels tentative for now, with the current alpha only having six characters to select and one map to play on. This is supported by an incredibly vibrant and extravagant Borderlands-style aesthetic, with audio and one-liners that fit the tone. All I'll say to finish this is that I want to try Hyenas out. Sadly, the invites are only open to those in North and South America, but this should roll out to Europe soon."
