Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Is Coming to PS4 and XB1; EA Teases More Games in the Franchise
Yesterday, during its Q1 2024 earnings call, Electronic Arts announced that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is being ported to old-generation consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). This is slightly surprising, as developer Respawn Entertainment previously claimed that the old consoles were being skipped to deliver a next-generation experience with this action/adventure sequel.
Clearly, the revenue potential of such a huge install base won over EA, which aims to get 'long-term value' with the new releases. Meanwhile, the executives said that 'millions of players' already interacted with the game, making it a commercial success. In the press release, the publisher also claimed Star Wars Jedi: Survivor users are spending more time with the game than they did with the previous installment, Fallen Order. No timeframe was shared for the game's launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The biggest question mark is how the game can perform on those considerably weaker consoles. One of the main points of criticism was its underwhelming performance, especially on PC where Respawn was forced to apologize for the disappointing state at release. Several patches have since improved but not entirely solved the situation. On PC, players equipped with a GeForce RTX 40 GPU can also take advantage of a performance-enhancing DLSS 3 mod crafted by PureDark, though of course that's not going to be an option for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Later in the Q1 2024 earnings call, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson teased more games coming in the franchise after Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (quote via Fool.com).
Certainly, I would love to see more in the Jedi franchise over time, it's just this extraordinary game that tells us an extraordinary story -- and certainly, again, we may be a little biased. But our sense based on the feedback that we're getting from our community and the quality of that product, it's one of the great beats in the Star Wars Galaxy this year and will likely continue to be a very meaningful part of that Galaxy for many years to come. And certainly, as we bring it to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, we think there'll be another little bump there for the franchise.
Again, this is hardly surprising given that even Disney talked about the huge success of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor as the foundation to unlock even more potential in gaming adaptations.
