FromSoftware games are famous (or perhaps infamous) for there somewhat vague approach to storytelling, and the upcoming Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon probably won’t change that too much. That said, FromSoftware is still treating us to an Armored Core VI story trailer, which is (unsurprisingly) light on specific details, but really sets the tone for the game’s bleak and unsparing world.
We see a number of mecha, referred to simply by number (617, 618, ect.) taking on a particularly intense mission. They ultimately succeed, but all the mechs are destroyed. We then see somebody, or something, simply referred to as 621, awakening from the slab in order to join the fight, a disembodied voice promising to give them “a reason to exist.” So yeah, it’s very FromSoftware-ey stuff! It’s not Dark Souls, but don’t expect a lot of uplift here! You can check out the Armored Core VI story trailer for yourself, below.
Fantasy or sci-fi, FromSoftware certainly brings their trademark sensibilities with them. While I don’t expect Armored Core VI’s main plot to be too complicated, I wonder if there will be opportunities to uncover a lot of backstory about the world ala Dark Souls or Elden Ring. Need to know more? Here’s a quick Armored Core VI story description…
"A mysterious new substance was discovered on the remote planet, Rubicon 3. As an energy source, this substance was expected to dramatically advance humanity’s technological and communications capabilities. Instead, this substance caused a catastrophe that engulfed the planet and the surrounding stars in flames and storms, forming a Burning Star System.
Almost half a century later, the same substance resurfaced on Rubicon 3, a planet now contaminated and sealed off by the catastrophe. Extra-terrestrial corporations and resistance groups fight over control of the substance. The player infiltrates Rubicon as an independent mercenary and finds themself in a struggle over the substance with the corporations and other factions.”
Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon sets its sights on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5 on August 25. What do you think? Getting excited for FromSoftware’s latest?
