Keeping track of all the latest video games coming out is an increasingly complex task, what with multiple PC storefronts, Xbox One, PS4, Switch, mobile, and more to keep track of, but don’t worry, I’m here to help. Every month I'll be running down the games you need to be keeping an eye on, from the AAA headliners to the indies you might otherwise overlook.
August is actually a bit of a sleeper month, with Armored Core VI, Baldur’s Gate III, and a pair of promising AA titles in Atlas Fallen and Immortals of Aveum launchings. Meanwhile, on the indie front we’ve got the teen dino drama Goodbye Volcano high, Unreal Engine 5 sci-fi shocker Fort Solis, Pokemon-meets-Diablo mashup Adore, and more.
Note: While I may have played demos or got early access to some of the games recommended in this article, in most cases I’m simply choosing games that look promising, and can’t vouch for the end product. Do wait for reviews before buying!
That said, here are the games you should be looking out for in August…
Baldur's Gate III (PC, Aug. 3; PS5, Sept. 5)
Coming from Divinity: Original Sin developer Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate III looks to be one of the most ambitious CRPGs in years. A huge world, epic story, player freedom, and yes, bear sex, awaits. Baldur’s Gate III has spent some time in early access and gathered plenty of fans just based on its first act (of three) so the full game has the potential to be something special. Get your summer activities in now, because you won’t be seeing sunlight for a while after this one comes out. You can pre-order Baldur’s Gate III here.
Atlas Fallen (PC, Xbox Series X/S & PS5, Aug. 10)
Coming from Deck13, the original developers of Lords of the Fallen and The Surge series, comes Atlas Fallen. Given Deck13’s history, you may assume this is another hardcore Soulslike, but Atlas Fallen is actually more of a straight-ahead action-adventure with a focus on exploration, intense action, and co-op play. Will you fall for Atlas Fallen? It remains to be seen, but promising elements are there. You can pre-order Atlas Fallen here.
Immortals of Aveum (PC, Xbox Series X/S & PS5, Aug. 22)
Immortals of Aveum is the work of a very interesting collection of talent. The developer behind the game, Ascendant Studios, was founded by veterans of Sledgehammer Games and Telltale Games. The end result is a game that’s one part Call of Duty, one part magical action-adventure with very flashy Unreal Engine 5 graphics. Does this mashup actually work? We’ll see, but Wccftech’s Kai Powell came away optimistic after his hands-on time. You can pre-order Immortals of Aveum here.
Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, Aug. 25)
Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon is the latest highly-anticipated project from FromSoftware, but don’t expect more Dark Souls or Elden Ring. Armored Core VI ditches the Soulsborne formula in favor of more straight-ahead action and mech customization. Thankfully, it seems like FromSoftware’s knack for memorable and punishing set pieces remains intact. Check out Wccftech’s latest hands-on impressions of the game here. You can pre-order Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon here.
Adore (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 & Switch, Aug. 3)
What would happen if you mashed up Pokemon and Diablo? You’d get Adore, that’s what. Adore is a creature-collecting RPG, but instead of the action taking place in a menu screen, you and your party of fuzzy pals will hack n’ slash through Diablo-style dungeons. This one’s been in early access for a while and users seem to, well, adore it. Here’s the Steam page for Adore.
Fort Solis (PC & PS5, Aug. 22)
2023 has been a good year for horror remakes, but if you’re looking for something original, you may want to check out Fort Solis. A story-driven sci-fi spookfest, Fort Solis boasts some fairly impressive-looking Unreal Engine 5 visuals and a star studded cast including Roger Clark (Arthur in RDR2) and Troy Baker (that guy who’s in literally every AAA game). Here’s the Steam page for Fort Solis.
Blasphemous 2 (PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5 & Switch, Aug. 24)
The first Blasphemous stood out from the rest of the Metroidvania pack back in 2019 with its unique dark world, intense action, and daunting level of challenge. Four years later, Blasphemous 2 is here to deliver more brutal goodness. This time around, you can expect a larger, more open world, new ways to customize your character, and bigger badder boss battles that will likely make you do some blaspheming of your own. Here’s the Steam page for Blasphemous 2.
Goodbye Volcano High (PC, PS4 & PS5, Aug. 29)
Being a teenager is tough. Being a teenager is ever harder when you happen to be a dinosaur and a big extinction-causing asteroid is about to hit the planet. In Goodbye Volcano High you navigate dramas of dino school, while also writing your own angsty garage band tunes using the game’s interactive song-crafting system. This one’s been through a bit of turmoil, at once point completely revamping its story, but it seems they’ve pulled a Triassic turnaround. Here’s the Steam page for Goodbye Volcano High.
Sea of Stars (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 & Switch, Aug. 29)
There are a lot of old-school throwback RPGs out there, but Sea of Stars looks more promising than most. Coming from Sabotage Studio, who made the top-notch Ninja Gaiden homage The Messenger, Sea of Stars features rich 2D art and what looks to be a simple-yet-engaging combat system. Hopefully, the game has a quality story to match. Here’s the Steam page for Sea of Stars.
