The US state of Vermont is now tantalisingly close to legalising sports betting and join the other 36 states in the US reaping tax revenues from sports betting.
Last Friday the House passed House Bill 127 allowing for sports betting and now it will make its way to the state Senate and if passed will go to Governor Phill Scott who has already indicated he is open to allowing it to become law.
Should the bill get through it would allow for between 2 to 6 sports betting sites and allow also to bet on horse racing but no college sports. If legalise the Department of Liquor and Lottery would regulate sports betting and also have the power to choose which operators on a bidding process.
HB 127 has a 20% revenues share towards the state on each operator permitted to offer sports betting, it also permits anyone over the age of 18 years to place a bet but no credit card deposits would be allowed only debit.
So the bill makes its way to the Senate for the final vote and the deadline is May 9 when the end of the state’s current legislative session closes.
Sports betting supporters hope it could pass before the deadline but the feeling is it will come down to the wire but there is much optimism that it will get enough votes.
