Dead Space Remake Was Made in 2.5 Years, Says Motive

To celebrate the launch of the Dead Space remake, a few developers from EA Motive participated in a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session.

Some of the replies were quite enlightening. For instance, according to Senior Producer Philippe Ducharme, the game was made in less than two and a half years, as most developers joined the Dead Space remake team after shipping Star Wars: Squadrons in September 2020.

We started in September 2020. Most of our dev team came from the ramp off of Star Wars Squadrons, which released around that time!

Creative Director Roman Campos-Oriola also said that a quick u-turn button was tested but ultimately cut from the final version of the game.

In the beginning, we wanted to add a quick 180-turn to Isaac. But we decided not to do that cause it was breaking the combat loop of Dead Space. The core combat loop is about a scary and almost unstoppable threat coming at you. If you can turn around and flee too fast, it changes a lot the experience of the fight. So we ended up not doing that.
We are all fans of Dead Space and not just the first game. And one of our goals was to try to make DS1 "acknowledge" more the rest of the Dead Space universe.

Finally, Game Director Eric Baptizat explained why the visor's light has been dimmed in the remake compared to the original Dead Space.

There is an actual light coming from the visor, but we decided to make it less intense than in other titles in the franchise. The reason is that the game is much darker, and that light, when it's too intense, quickly turns into a constant flashlight. So we decided to tune it down and only keep it as a detail when you get close to a wall.

Check out Nathan's review of the game here. For the record, EA Motive will be busy with the new Iron Man game next, although they also expressed interest in exploring other parts of the Dead Space franchise.
