The Expanse: Episode 1 – How to Complete the Laser Crystal Sidequest

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a new episodic adventure series from a reformed version of Telltale Games and Deck Nine (the team behind Life is Strange: Before the Storm and True Colors). Like the Telltale series of old this one largely focuses on story, player choice, and quick-time action scenes, but it also features an array of collectibles and even sidequests. Most of the collectibles can be found if you just take some time to search all the areas the main story forces you to pass through, but sidequests may require you to venture a little further off the beaten path.

The Expanse: Episode 1 offers one major side quest, which asks you to find a new Laser Crystal that will improve your medical capabilities. It isn’t hard to find, but unlike most other items in the chapter, it is easily missed. Here’s how to get it…

• Step 1 - Midway through Episode 1 you’ll be tasked with retrieving an officer’s hand in order to fool the fingerprint lock on the Officer’s Ward door. Head down the hallway leading away from the Officer’s Ward doorway with the blood strain on the floor and the glowing wire. Head left and follow the path, and it’s time for a space walk to another part of the wrecked ship.

• Step 2 - The path for continuing the main story is directly ahead of you, marked with green light, but where you want to go to complete the sidequest is marked in red. Fly upward toward the red light. Fly past the red nav beacon and down the corridor and you’ll find the Laser Crystal at the end. You can now return to the main story path.

So, what does collecting the Laser Crystal get you? Well, that’s the million-dollar question, but chances are good it will change your storyline or present you with an additional option in later chapters of The Expanse. You also unlock the “Doctor Approved” achievement/trophy.
