Immortals of Aveum Writer Talks about the Game’s Lore and Protagonist; New Trailer Showed Off

Immortals of Aveum

Immortals of Aveum is now just one month away from its new release date following the short delay from its original July 20th launch.

Today, developer Ascendant Studios and publisher Electronic Arts are diving into the making of the game, chiefly the lore and story, through an interview with renowned writer Michael Kirkbride (The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Minecraft: Story Mode - A Telltale Series, Batman: The Enemy Within, The Walking Dead: The Final Season).

Kirkbride explained that magic is intrinsic to the fictional world, as it was created at the same time. However, while it can be used for wondrous achievements, humans have been embroiled in the seemingly endless Everwar for complete control of magic. Anyone hitting the draft age is potentially thrown into the meat grinder. Kirkbride then moved to describe the protagonist of Immortals of Aveum, Jak, played by Darren Barnet.

When we first meet him, the last thing Jak wants to do is join the war. Or really have anything to do with the magical ruling class that treats him and his (magicless) friends like trash. But then, when a traumatic event causes him to manifest a very powerful, very rare form of magic, Grand Magnus Kirkan finds him, giving him a reason to fight in the war and trains him to be really, really good at it.

Jak's the raw recruit with amazing new powers joining the elite special forces who have a lot of history together. So there's some initial awkwardness, and like anyone that's being told that they're rare and special, Jak sometimes lets it get to his head. That never goes well.

By and large, Jak's a good kid—loyal to his friends—guided by an independent streak from his early days as a street thief that he just can't shake, for better or worse. It gets him into trouble, but it also lets him think of novel ways to solve situations others think are too dire.

While creating Immortals of Aveum, Kirkbride and his crew have prepared a lore book detailing the history and culture of the world. Ascendant Studios teased that a 'digital version' may be unlocked through the efforts of the community; more details on that will be forthcoming.

Meanwhile, the developers have presented another trailer today. Called 'Securing the Binding Stone', it shows Jak being scolded by his superiors because he didn't destroy a magical artifact as ordered.

San Diego Comic-Con attendees can also check out the Making Immortals of Aveum panel, scheduled today between 12:45 and 1:45 PM local time in Room 6BCF.

Immortals of Aveum will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X on August 22nd. Check out Kai's hands-on preview article here.
