Diablo IV is Out Now and Blizzard’s Fastest-Selling Game Ever with 93 Million Hours Played
It’s been a long wait, but Diablo IV officially launches today, and it seems like it’s the big win the embattled Blizzard has been needing. According to Blizzard themselves, Diablo IV is their fastest-selling game of all time on both PC and console. The term can be a little slippery, but apparently, the “fastest-selling” title is based on pre-order sales from both retailers and Blizzard's own data. To give you an idea of how many people are playing, those who have been hacking and slashing through the game in early access (which kicked off on June 1) have already racked up 93 million hours of playtime. That translates to around 10 thousand years worth of Diablo IV played in just a few days. Not bad!
Haven’t been keeping up with Diablo IV? The game expands on the usual Diablo action with a huge open world and will receive full seasonal live-service support post-launch (here are some more details on that). By most accounts, Diablo IV is a fun, nicely-polished dungeon crawler, even if it doesn’t exactly reinvent the action-RPG genre as we know it. That’s more-or-less what Wccftech’s Alessio Palumbo had to say about the game in his full review…
“Diablo IV is a return to form at a much needed time for Blizzard. It delivers incredibly fun hack and slash action combat, a greatly improved skill system, and a ton of things to do, not to mention the best story told in the franchise yet. It also looks awesome, sounds great, and runs well (except for rare instances of traversal stuttering). That said, it sticks a little bit too closely to the rulebook, which works against it in a few areas. The open world is not as dynamic as one could have hoped, with events getting repetitive rather quickly. The side content doesn't provide any real narrative juice, and the endgame replayability may not be as deep as needed due to limited randomization and lack of certain features.”
