Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag Remake Rumored Skull and Bones Dev Likely Involved

Assassin's Creed IV

Ubisoft is doubling down on the Assassin’s Creed franchise, with upcoming games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red and Codename Hexe, but it seems they’re also adding a major remake to their slate. According to Kotaku, Ubisoft is prepping a remake of the fan-favorite pirate-themed Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

At this point, it’s unclear to what extent Assassin’s Creed IV will be remade. Will it be more of a remaster, with upgraded visuals, but similar gameplay? Or will it seek to expand the content offered by the original game in some way? We’ll have to wait and see.

One thing that may cause concern, is that Kotaku believes Ubisoft Singapore, the team behind the embattled pirate-themed game Skull and Bones, will be “heavy involved” in the development of AC4 remake. Presumably, original AC4 creators Ubisoft Montreal will also have their hand in the remake, as they seem to touch almost every big game Ubisoft puts out, but they have other big projects on their plate.

Speaking of Skull and Bones, Kotaku reports Ubisoft Singapore is bearing down on the project ahead of the game’s closed beta, with employees returning to in-office work and being encouraged to work overtime with offers of free meals and other perks.

Of course, take these Assassin’s Creed IV rumors with a grain of salt for now, but Kotaku doesn’t usually report original rumors unless they’ve pinned down their sources. With Ubisoft really needing a win, it would make sense to revisit one of their most beloved games ever, and while Ubisoft Singapore has struggled to get Skull and Bones out the door, they do have a lot of experience with the naval combat key to Assassin’s Creed IV. At this point, I’m cautious about anything Ubisoft does, but I think I’d be up for a return trip to the Caribbean.

What are your thoughts on all of this? Would you be interested in tackling Assassin’s Creed IV? Or would it be better if Ubisoft committed its resources to new things? And what do you think about Ubisoft Singapore’s potential involvement?
