Ontario reported its first set of figures from the newly expanded gambling market for the first quarter since the April expansion with total gaming revenues at $162 million.
That is well down on expectations since the opening of the industry to private companies for the first time allowing betting and other forms of gambling.
VIXIO GamblingCompliance the US consulting firm estimated in a recent report that Ontario could expect gross gaming revenues of $1.6 billion in the first full year and rising to $2.4 billion in the following year. Those estimates now seem well off given the first set of figures reported by the province.
iGaming Ontario (iGO) who regulates the market under the umbrella of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) released the figures on Tuesday 30th August for the period from April 4th to June 30th
Dave Forestell, iGO’s board chair said on the results, “Our aim is to be the best gaming jurisdiction in the world and these positive results are an early sign that we’re on our way.” He went on to say, “With a competitive revenue share rate and low barriers to entry, Ontario is an attractive i-gaming market with a strong player base.”
